PostSubject: Where does ARCANE fit into the equation   Tue May 13, 2008 9:45 pm

Ive been fire almost all my long life. Even as a child in elementary school I was predisposed to throwing around FIREBLASTs and BLASTWAVEs whenever someone so much as jumped at me wrong.

Having grown older and wiser in my young adult years I respeced frost and wept. I had missed so much. Frost was a very different play style and much better at mob farming than fire. What then does this mean for arcane? Will arcane help bring the lights-o-glory and help god descend this wicked earth and bring revolution?

My Arcane spec:
goal - attain as much crit, dmg, and %chance to hit as possible.
result - arcane blast crits for a fuckton. Arcane missles is ok but theyre both really freaking mana intensive.

First thoughts:
Arcane can throw around some serious damage, and if you have the mana and the time your arcane blast can cause some serious problems. Thus, arcane blast and missile are good when you a) have a tank, b) are fighting a big fight that will go down quickly (i.e. any standard mob fight in a raid), and c) don't mind throwing back potions and changing up your rotation to accommodate for arcane blasts' buff's cooldown (that is, try to keep the cast speed down).

Details:
Arcane blast can deal more than super buffed fireball when its at its fastest and if your very careful, you can start casting arcane blast and by the time you've finnished the "arcane blast buff" will have passed, in that sense you get the +SpellHaste and not the +ManaCost. Arcane blast is especially effective if you have a lot of +crit, like me. Otherwise its a waste of mana and maybe good enough to give scorch-spam a run for its money. Arcane missile is effectively a 6sec cast time spell that deals anywhere from 2500, to 3500 on average, to 4500 on good days. In the span of 6 sec you can cast 2 fireballs and a fireblast. Completely talent buffed, (my) fireball deals 1700 and fireblast can deal 900. So, on a crappy day fire would deal 4400 dmg. On an average or good day one of those spells crit and ignite ticks (which causes more dmg than the arcane talent that ups the damage from crits by 50%) fire blows arcane out of the water.

Fire is also more mana efficient (easily fire has a splash of arcane). If fire can deal more damage and is more mana efficient then why spec arcane.

+10% chance to hit with arcane spells. In order to take on a raid boss (lvl 73 eletes) the mage needs a total of 16.8% chance to hit. So spec'ing arcane gets you more than 1/2 way to raid safe with only 5 talent points. That and with an extra 2 points you get another +10 chance to hit coupled with "draw 40% less aggro with arcane spells).

I want to hear if someone else has gone with arcane and what they saw.

My rotation (if I'm raiding) is AB, AB, AM, AB, AB, AM
